Built Oldway Mansion, and many of the prominent buildings in Paignton, invented the singer sewing machine, portable and afordable for use in the home.

The Pirates of Penzance was premiered at the Royal Bijou Theater Paignton. The D'Oyly Carte family who produced many Gilbert & Sullivan Operas, lived at Coleton Fishacre.

A replica of Drake's ship the Golden Hind can be seen at Brixham Harbour, his house Buckland Abbey and 'Drake's Drum ' are only 40 mins away.

Brunel built the railway that still links Penzance with London via Paignton and the South Devon Coast. He also built the station at Dartmouth which is one of the only stations in England to have never seen a train.

After his defeat at Waterloo, Napoleon was imprisoned on HMS Bellerophon which was anchored in Torbay for a while making Napoleon the bays frist major tourist attraction.
